The principal segment of the book, "Lifestyles in the Golden Land," contains eight essays that to a great extent chronicle Didion's experiences in her native California. ![]() Slouching Towards Bethlehem is viewed as an advanced classic, frequently held up as the best quality level for the contemporary essay and instructed generally in college classrooms. Here they are specifically connected to introduce a sharp, insightful, severe, and frequently interesting portrait of a woman searching for her character and for the spirit of her country while caught in 1960s boredom. ![]() ![]() The first door (labeled "The Prisoner") brings Eddie Dean, a young heroin addict in the process of smuggling cocaine into New York for the Mob boss Enrico Balazar. As Roland passes through these doors, he brings back the companions who will join him on his quest to the Dark Tower. ![]() Each door opens onto New York City at different periods in time (1987, 19, respectively). Feverish and losing strength, Roland continues north along the beach, where he eventually encounters three doors. His untreated wounds soon become infected. Roland wakes up on a beach, and he is suddenly attacked by a strange, lobster-like creature, which he dubs a "lobstrosity." He kills the creature, but not before losing the index and middle fingers of his right hand and most of his right big toe. The book begins less than seven hours after the end of The Dark Tower: The Gunslinger after The Man in Black has described The Gunslinger's fate using tarot cards. The story is a continuation of The Gunslinger and follows Roland of Gilead and his quest towards the Dark Tower. The series was inspired by Childe Roland to the Dark Tower Came by Robert Browning.
